The purpose of the following Q & A is to help you understand more about Freemasonry and about what it takes to become a member of Tampa Bay Lodge No. 252.

What is Freemasonry? 

• Freemasonry is the World’s oldest and largest fraternity. 

• There are approximately 6-million Freemasons in the World with 900,000 members in the U.S.  

 

What is the purpose of Freemasonry? 

• To help good men live better lives through self-improvement, brotherhood and community service

How old is Freemasonry? 

• Modern organized Freemasonry if over 300 years old, however its roots as a trade craft stretch back much farther to the stone mason guilds of the Middle Ages in the 14th century 

 

Is Freemasonry attached to any religion? 

• No, but we do have religious elements . . . we pray like any other religious organization and our historical roots are based on religious references.

Our members come from many religions including Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Hindu, among others.  Among Christians we have members of all denominations Catholics, Protestants and Eastern Orthodoxy. 

• To be a Freemason you must believe in a Supreme Being – no atheist can be a Freemason  

 

Is Freemasonry a secret society? 

• No, we are an organization with secrets like college fraternities or private corporations

Are Freemasons satanic, Illuminati or part of the new world order? 

• No, but as the World’s largest Fraternity we’ve attracted the attention of fiction writers 

​

What will I need to study to become a Freemason? 

• If you become a Mason, you will be given books to study with a mentor who will guide you along the process of learning the lessons of the three degrees of Freemasonry 

​

What must I do to become a Freemason and a member of Tampa Bay Lodge No. 252? 

• You must Petition the lodge for membership 

• You must be 18-years of age or older 

• You must believe in a Supreme Being 

• You must complete a Federal Background Check and cannot have any felonies in your background 

• You must have lived in Florida for the last 12 months
